IRE announces partnership with Cometdocs

You have probably encountered the problem of the PDF; the data and information are there, but locked in the PDF leaving you unable to filter, sort and work with the data in other ways. This file format can frustrate the savviest of journalists, but there are services available to help. IRE has partnered with Cometdocs.com, an online file conversion and storage tool to better help journalists with PDF files.

This partnership means IRE members are eligible to receive a free premium account from Cometdocs.com.

"The role of a journalist involves working with multitudes of information and data, often with very tight deadlines. Knowing the importance of what journalists do for the development and progress of our society, we, the Cometdocs Online Management System team (www.cometdocs.com) are very excited to support the work of journalists by making it easier for them to convert, transfer and manage their electronic documents and data," said Keith Bradbury, co-founder of Investintech.com Inc, which provides the technology and co-owns the service.

"As such, we want to offer all members of the IRE in good standing, free premium account access for cometdocs.com that can be used and renewed for free on a yearly basis. With free access, IRE members will be able to convert their electronic documents between many of the most popular document formats (such as native and scanned PDF) and also store, share and manage these files online through our simple to use cometdocs interface."

IRE Executive Director Mark Horvit said Cometdocs helps solve a growing problem for journalists.

"Nothing is more frustrating than getting information you need to analyze in a largely useless PDF," Horvit said. "Cometdocs helps solve that problem. By making their premium service free to IRE members, Cometdocs provides journalists with a powerful analysis tool."

What does this mean to you: As an IRE member,  your premium Cometdocs account, (normally $9.99 per month), will allow you to convert an unlimited amount of documents each week, upload up to 50 documents at the same time, convert multiple documents at once, run optical character recognition on your documents and more.

To get an upgraded account: Current IRE members should send an email to cometdocs@ire.org requesting one.
If you're not a current IRE member, you can join or renew here.

Fascinating how once a public agency figures out that you can go ahead and convert the PDF to Excel relatively easily; they realize that there's no point in stonewalling with the PDF and they are more apt to provide the .cvs file. I've been using Able to Extract, but look forward to trying CometDocs.
