bob greene
I became an investigative reporter on the day I heard Bob Greene speak to my journalism class. For the last 30 years, I've lived off the lessons I learned from that one speech. I think he'd be pleased to know that I've shared those lessons with countless others.

Bob Greene
Bob Greene was an inspiration to any investigative reporter who ever met him. He embodied all those values we hold dear; the hunt for the truth, and only the truth, no matter what powerful person or organization stood in the way. His love for investigative reporting never waned. For years, an IRE conference was not really an event unless Bob was there. I'll never forget the year he lost so much weight. He so delighted in accepting hugs, daring us to finally wrap our arms all the way around his waist. IRE would not exist without Bob. So many journalists would not be who they are today without Bob. He was a giant, a mentor and one hell of a storyteller. Let's all raise a toast to Bob. He wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

The Bear Climbs Over the Mountain
My enduring image of Bob will be sitting at the head of a table of Bulgarian journalists at the tail end of a long night of eating and drinking. Bob had been the star of an IRE training session for Bulgarian journalists that Tracy Barnett had set up back in the days when international training was relatively new and we were not sure would translate well. Though they spoke little English, they clung to his words, followed him around and took him to dinner. When he matched them shot for shot downing their moonshine strength rakia they applauded. And then, as Bulgarian journalists are wont, they began singing traditional songs. Bob said he'd reciprocate with an American classic. And then this giant of journalism and foe of organized crime began belting THE BEAR CLiMBS OVER THE MOUNTAIN. He taught 'em all the words that night, as he has taught all of us so much.

Giants walked the land
and though I never knew Bob, I know he was one of those giants. He inspired a whole generation of journalists, especially investigative journalists and was the godfather of the IRE in the best sense of the term.

At an IRE conference syllabus exchange, probably facilitated by Rose Ciotta who posted above, I grabbed on of Bob's. I'll never forget one of the assignments -- he had students go around neighborhoods (where organized crime figures lived) ahead of the garbage trucks and pick up the trash. They took the bags to a garage, dumped and sorted the contents, proving, indeed that you might find a story anywhere if you just dig hard enough.

Somewhere the angels are lifting a glass in toast. His kind may never pass this way again.

Bob Greene
We have lost a great journalist, teacher and mentor. I ask all of IRE members to join me in taking a moment today to reflect on the enormous contributions Bob Greene made to our profession and to IRE in particular. IRE exists because of Bob's courage and determination. Anyone who attended an IRE conference over dozens of years will recall Bob's generous help to any journalist seeking guidance or inspiration. Our best tribute to him is to continue doing the kind of reporting that he did himself and would be proud of. I mourn his passing.
