Description: Investigative Reporters and Editors is seeking an experienced person to oversee its Database Library and to develop new Web-based projects.
IRE is nonprofit organization with 4,500 members in the U.S. and abroad that provides training, resources and networking for working journalists, journalism educators and students. Its nationally known Database Library provides government data, data analysis, and training for journalists from more than 200 news organizations each year.
The Database Library director oversees up to six graduate research assistants and two information technology positions. The director also will be a lead teacher in seminars and classes in computer-assisted reporting.
We are looking for a candidate with a Bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience. We are seeking someone with significant experience in journalism and at least five year of computer-assisted reporting experience and some management or project experience.
Responsibilities:
Manage (interview, hire, train and supervise) three to six graduate research assistants and oversee Database Library work obtaining government databases, converting the data into standard, accessible formats, distributing the data to journalists nationally and internationally, and developing new and innovative data tools for IRE's Web services. Also has direct supervision of IRE's systems administrator and computer support specialists.
Conduct data analysis and do consulting work for news organizations, both broadcast and print, using advanced database, statistical and mapping software.
Increase revenue for the Database Library by adding value to our basic product line, offering additional services online, and expanding our data analysis services.
Design, develop, acquire and monitor computer systems and databases – supervise and assist with program design.
Schedule, organize and manage classes and instructors during the annual CAR Conferences and the annual IRE conference (some 40 to 65 classes).
Act as a lead instructor for IRE’s Boot Camp seminars at the Missouri School of Journalism campus, teaching journalists how to obtain and analyze government databases to enhance their reporting skills. Also represent NICAR and IRE at national and international conferences and workshops by speaking, creating training curricula and serving as instructor.
