Uplink is NICAR's bimonthly newsletter on computer-assisted reporting written by top reporters around the country. Often, Uplink stories are written after reporters have had particular success using data to investigate stories. The columns include valuable information on advanced database techniques as well as success stories written by newly trained CAR reporters. The newsletters also include information on upcoming NICAR events.
Uplink contains information on changes in government data-access policies, and the recent transition of government agencies to providing data online, rather than in print format.
In addition to information from NICAR about developments in the computer-assisted reporting world, Uplink includes stories written by reporters on how they used CAR to develop some of their investigative stories. Some articles from 2006 include:
- Matthew Waite of the St. Petersburg Times explains how he used advanced mapping techniques to document the loss of wetlands in Florida.
- Brian Hamman of IRE and NICAR explains how to use accident, inspection, and violation data available on the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration's Web site.
- Frank Bass of The Associated Press explains how he and colleague Dirk Lammers discovered that loans intended for victims of the 9/11 attacks had gone to many businesses that were unaffected by the attacks.
- Jennifer LaFleur of The Dallas Morning News describes the statistical methods her paper used to find that race still plays a key role in who serves on juries.
