O'Reilly joins IRE team to assist newsrooms on special projects

Award-winning investigative journalist and computer-assisted reporting expert Richard O'Reilly has joined Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. and the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting as a consultant for special database projects.

O'Reilly, who worked 30 years at the Los Angeles Times, will collaborate with the IRE and NICAR data library staff on analysis for broadcast and print organizations. At the Times, he was the computer-assisted reporting coordinator and was involved in numerous projects involving data analysis.

NICAR is a joint program of IRE and the Missouri School of Journalism and has been assisting hundreds of newsrooms in data analysis since 1989. O'Reilly will bring vast experience in deciphering trends and stories from complex databases for news stories.

The consulting services include data analysis, onsite visits to print or broadcast newsrooms, and help organizing investigative and CAR projects to present them clearly and accurately. O'Reilly has worked with IRE frequently in the past, both speaking and teaching at its conferences and workshops.

"Dick O'Reilly brings a fantastic expertise to IRE that will allow us to increase the depth and breadth of our services to newsrooms and to improve journalism and the credibility of journalists," said Brant Houston, IRE executive director.
O'Reilly will work directly with Jeff Porter, the director of the data library. Before joining IRE, Porter was an investigative journalist specializing in computer-assisted reporting at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

"IRE is a national resource for investigative and computer-assisted reporting at all levels," O'Reilly said. "I'm pleased to join the IRE team and hope that I'll be able to assist newspapers and broadcasters in many ways."
