Membership status of part-time journalists and 2009 budget on the table in Miami
IRE members will vote on a proposed change to membership rules at the 2008 IRE Membership meeting in Miami. They also have an opportunity to preview the proposed IRE budget for fiscal year 2009, up for vote at the Board of Directors meeting.
Members will be asked to consider approving an amendment to IRE’s articles of incorporation during the membership meeting, 6 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the InterContinental Hotel in Miami.. The amendment would expand the definition of IRE’s associate membership to include individuals engaged in reporting and editing part-time.
IRE’s Board of Directors supports the proposed amendment, which it believes to be in the best interests of the organization and recommends its adoption by the membership. The board believes that the amendment would address the growing number of part-time journalists who are engaged in investigative reporting, particularly on the Web, and who would benefit from associate membership in the organization. (Click here for a full explanation and the wording of the amendment in .PDF format).
A vote by two-thirds of the members who attend the annual membership meeting is required to amend the Articles of Incorporation.
Board elections are also held at the membership meeting. This year, eight candidates have applied for seven available seats. Filing remains open until noon on June 6. Members who attend the 2008 IRE Conference are required to vote in person at the meeting. (The deadline for requesting absentee ballots has passed.)
Members are invited to preview the 2009 IRE budget, which will be on the agenda of the Board of Directors meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Balmoral room. This meeting is open to members. (Click here to download the budget.)
