With the closing of the AP Web site on Census data -- and as a service for journalists who are working with the 2000 Census data -- IRE and NICAR will soon provide easy access to data Census releases including:

• the data used for congressional redistricting (released in spring 2001), down to the block level with population counts for race and Hispanic or Latino categories
• the data from the short form (released in the summer of 2002), with counts for 63 race and ethnicity categories and housing characteristics
• the data from the long form (released in the summer of 2002) that has even a wider selection of categories, including income, housing values, disabilities and veteran status

In addition, we will offer help from our database library in using, interpreting and mapping this data.

This is part of our continuing efforts to help and train journalists in the use of data for better in-depth and investigative stories and to archive and preserve government data.
