Uplink goes online
Columbia, Mo. -- The staff of Uplink, NICAR's computer-assisted reporting newsletter, hope readers will enjoy the latest issue -- online. The success of Uplink in PDF inspired us to make the leap to Web publication, making production process even more efficient. Now that it's established, the new site will allow us to bring you stories faster and post timely updates on developments in the field.
We thank our subscribers for their patience as we developed the site. We felt it was time to take some big steps in the production of Uplink and keep us up-to-date in every sense of the word. We are especially grateful to our contributors who wrote articles over the summer. Your support is the key to making Uplink a valuable resource for sharing CAR projects and practical advice from experts in the field.
You'll still find popular features, such as "First Ventures" and "Mapping it Out," and we plan to develop video and audio components to future stories, too. Other benefits include: easy access to current stories, as well as archives of electronic editions; RSS feeds to alert you to new posts; ability to explore links to original stories and sources described in Uplink articles. The Uplink site will also benefit from the redesign of IRE's entire Web site, which will begin this fall.
How to read the new UplinkGo to www.nicar.org/uplink. The home page is in the public portion of the NICAR site, but login is required to read the full text. Choose the appropriate login type: (Combining the logins is part of our Web redevelopment to-do list!)
* If you are a subscriber and IRE member, you can enter your last name and IRE membership number in the login boxes. If you have trouble logging in, please contact jgreen@ire.org to check the status of your subscription and membership.
* Non-members who subscribe should click on "Non-member sign-in" (or go straight to www.nicar.org/uplink/subscribers and log in). You will use the same Uplink ID and password that allowed you to download the PDF copies. If you do not have a password or have questions about the login, please contact jgreen@ire.org or Megan Means, meganm@ire.org.
About subscriptions
Currently, individual subscription prices remain $40 for IRE members and $60 for nonmembers. Because content will be updated on a rolling basis, rather than a bimonthly schedule, a subscription will provide access to the Uplink site for 12 months from the date your subscription is processed.
RSS Feeds and Email Notices
To keep up with the latest stories, subscribe to an RSS feed. Select a feed for IRE member subscribers or non-member subscribers to ensure that you can use the appropriate login information to access the articles.
IRE will also send periodic email notices regarding new content. Please be sure that we have an up-to-date email contact address.
Please send any suggestions or thoughts on the new Uplink and please send ideas for the future to uplink@nicar.org
