ELECTIONS SLATED FOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
If you have been considering running for the IRE Board of Directors, now is the time to act. Six of 13 seats come up for election this year at the IRE National Conference in Kansas City, June 3-6. Although most incumbents with expiring terms will seek re-election, at least one member is not expected to run again.
The members whose seats are up for balloting include: John Lindsay, Judy Miller, James Neff, Rosemary Armao, David Boardman and Rose Ciotta. Lindsay, the Board’s current chairman, has indicated he will not seek re-election.
Candidacy statements with brief biographical information received by May 28 will be posted on the IRE Web site. The deadline for filing for the next election, however, coincides with the conference.
Candidates who wait for the conference to announce must deliver a one-page statement/bio to the IRE executive director or deputy director by 5 p.m. on June 4. These will be posted on a bulletin board in the main conference area. At the Saturday afternoon, June 5 membership meeting, candidates need to be nominated and seconded from the floor by two other IRE members. There will be no nominating speeches, but candidates will have two minutes to address their peers. Voting will be by ballot at the membership meeting with no absentee ballots.
The IRE Board serves as the governing body of IRE and meets several times a year — both as a group and in conference calls — to debate issues of importance to the membership and vote on those issues. Directors serve on various committees made up of board members and appointed non-board members to focus more closely on such topics as diversity, publications, the endowment and freedom of information.
Candidates submitting their candidacy statements for the Web are asked to keep them to about 250 words each. Photos submitted with the statements also will be posted.
Immediately following the Board elections, there will be a separate election for IRE Awards contest judges. Judge candidates will be nominated and seconded from the floor. Voting will be by ballot.
