RECORD ATTENDANCE AT CAR CONFERENCE
BOSTON - A record number of journalists attended the annual four-day National Computer-Assisted Reporting Conference held in Boston through Sunday.
The conference - hosted by Investigative Reporters and Editors and The Boston Globe - drew 560 IRE members from throughout the United States and journalists from Latin America, Europe, Africa and Australia.
Those attending chose from more than 60 panels and workshops on reporting, editing, open records, newsroom training and other topics. Another 70 hands-on classes were held on spreadsheets, database managers, Internet research and more. Sessions were he ld at the Fairmont Copley Plaza and Boston University.
"This conference was yet another sign of how computer-assisted reporting is becoming part of the mainstream of daily and beat investigative journalism," said Brant Houston, executive director of IRE. "The attendance was the highest ever, and reflected not only the increasing interest in the U.S., but also in foreign countries."
The many IRE members who could not make the trip to Boston can order audio tapes of the sessions and tipsheets from the many panelists through the IRE Web site, Houston pointed out. The site, www.ire.org, lists IRE's many training opportunities.
Organizations contributing to the conference through financial sponsorship or other support included The Boston Globe, Gannett Foundation, New England Newspaper Assn., Boston University, Community Newspaper Co. of Eastern Massachusetts, Union News (Springfield), The Christian Science Monitor, Freedom Forum, Boston Herald, WCVB-TV Channel 5, The Providence Journal-Bulletin, WBZ-TV Channel 4, and WHDH-TV Channel 7.
