IRE NAMES FELLOWS FOR BOSTON CONFERENCE

Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc today announced the winners of its Minority and Small News Organization Fellowship awards for the National Computer-Assisted Reporting Conference to be held March 11-14, 1999 in Boston, MA.

The winners of the Minority Fellowships for the National CAR conference in Boston are Brenda J. Buote of The Baltimore Sun, Jeffrey M. Ortega of The Columbus Dispatch and Linda Salomon of KNBC-TV in Los Angeles.

The winners of the Small News Organization Fellowships for the National CAR conference in Boston are Tim Black of the Star-Courier in Kewanee, Ill., Michael T. Chalmers of the Observer-Dispatch in Utica, N.Y., and Robert L. Sanders of Granite News Service in Concord, N.H.

The IRE fellowship program is aimed at increasing the number of minorities exposed to investigative journalism and computer-assisted reporting and at increasing the number of journalists from small news organizations who can attend national conferences.

The Boston conference is the National Computer-Assisted Reporting Conference hosted by IRE and the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting.

IRE is still accepting applications for fellowships to the IRE National Conference set for June 3-6 in Kansas City, Mo., and for computer-assisted reporting boot camps held at the University of Missouri. Boot camps are set for May, July and August of this year.

Information and application forms can be found on IRE's Web site at the following address: http://www.ire.org/training/fellowships.html or by calling membership coordinator John Green at 573-882-2772.

IRE also offers The James Bennett Scholarship, which allows a limited number of college students in Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma or Louisiana to attend the national conference. The scholarships are made possible by a donation from Dr. James R. Bennett of the University of Arkansas.
