IRE publication wins top award

The IRE Journal has won a top honor in the Folio: Editorial Excellence awards, an international magazine contest. The Journal won the silver award in the publishing category.

It is The Journal's second consecutive award in this contest. There were more than 400 entries from a dozen countries in all categories in this year's contest.

The Journal is the leading publication about how to do investigative reporting and using those techniques on a daily basis in print and broadcast.

Judged by the industry's leading editors, publishers and consultants, nominees for the Editorial Excellence Awards are evaluated on how well they articulate and adhere to their editorial mission statements, and winners are determined by comparing the judges' evaluations of how each title fulfills its mission, the quality of its content and, to a lesser extent, its overall design.

The magazine greatly depends on articles done on a volunteer basis by journalists in the U.S. and overseas. Published bimonthly, it highlights the best investigative journalism. Last year, The IRE Journal won the gold.

"The award is not just for the IRE staff, but for all our contributors and members who give their time and talent to making this such a valuable publication for all journalists," said Brant Houston, IRE's executive director.

The magazine's editor is Deputy Director Len Bruzzese, who oversees IRE's publications. The Journal is staffed by freelance managing editor Anita Bruzzese, freelance designer Wendy Gray, graduate research assistant Gina Bramucci and other graduate students of the Missouri School of Journalism.

Serving as regular contributors are Steve Weinberg, journalist and a professor at the Missouri School of Journalism; David Smallman, a partner in the law firm Steinhart & Falconer LLP; and Charles Davis, a Missouri School of Journalism professor and an expert in Freedom of Information issues.

IRE is a nonprofit organization providing education, resources and support to working journalists. IRE offers cutting-edge training in all facets of investigative journalism, a vast Internet-accessible resource center and many networking opportunities.
