More than 350 attend reporting conference

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- An IRE Reporting Conference held Saturday (March 31) drew more than 350 people -- most of them college students.

The University of Missouri School of Journalism acted as co-host for the event, which was aimed at exposing young professionals, student journalists and others from small news organizations to some of the most talented reporters and editors in investigative reporting.

About 30 speakers, including Pulitzer Prize winners or finalists Leon Dash, David Boardman, Mike McGraw, Joel Kaplan, Jo Craven McGinty, John Ullmann, Victor Merina, Steve Doig, Ken Wells, Terry Ganey and Judy Miller served on panels or taught in hands-on computer-assisted reporting classes. Notable broadcast journalists included: David Raziq, Stuart Watson, Paul Adrian and Mark Lagerkvist.

In a keynote address, Diana Henriques of The New York Times made a strong case for all journalists understanding how nearly all stories involve a tie to business. She urged the audience to learn business backgrounding techniques to make those connections.

Many of the college students took advantage of visiting job recruiters including Gannett Co., The Kansas City Star, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

While many of the students were from the state of Missouri, groups came from as far away as Arizona, Florida, Minnesota, Nebraska and Texas.
