Web Developer

Newsday is looking for a Web Developer to join a team of developers and journalists in the newsroom. In this role you will be responsible for creating special projects that are primarily database-driven and displayed in an intuitive, user-friendly interface for interactive storytelling on newsday.com and other related websites. You will be involved in the web development process from start to finish; from enterprising and planning to developing, testing and deployment.

This position is responsible for:

  • Writing server-side and client-side code to create user interfaces that display large data sets in an easy-to-use format;

  • Creating and maintaining relational databases (primarily MySQL). Examples include but are not limited to public data such as school evaluations, campaign contributions and sports statistics;

  • Working with online and print editors to conceptualize and develop projects with various scopes, from same-day projects to projects that span several months;

  • Incorporating new technologies and methods for displaying information, including the use of social media applications, multimedia presentations and interactive widgets and modules.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a bachelors’ degree in computer science, journalism or a related field with 3-5 years experience working as a web developer for a large media company;

  • Be well-versed in the following: PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, jQuery, Ajax, CSS, SVN, third party API's including Google Maps, Facebook and Twitter; 

  • Have experience working in a newsroom and be comfortable producing in a fast-paced environment;

  • Have working knowledge of web database trends, computer assisted reporting and web programming;

  • Display strong communication skills and be adept at collaborating with non-technical coworkers;

  • Have project management skills and be able to respond to changing priorities, with a commitment to getting the job done and the ability to work around unexpected hurdles;

  • Possess flexible availability to work various shifts and monitor your projects once online;

  • Experience managing, maintaining and extending a CMS;

  • Have reliable transportation to get to and from the Melville office.
