Data Visualization Analyst II
The Gazette in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is seeking a data visualization specialist to work on a growing digital team focused on in-depth reporting and developing new forms of online storytelling. The ideal candidate will collaborate with co-workers on how to best present information and build interactive maps, graphics and other visualizations that help tell a story or present information in a way that grows audience understanding of a topic. Work will be focused in the areas of government and Iowa’s never-ending political season, business and investigative reporting, though opportunities to work in other topical areas will exist.
We’re interested in building the majority of our visualizations to stand alone, sustain themselves and have a long life rather than live in a single news cycle. Most will live online, though we expect there will be an occasion where we want to transfer the visualization to print or broadcast.
The ideal candidate understands every project is different but looks for ways to redeploy their work and build on portions of past work to create new experiences.
This candidate should have some previous experience and should be comfortable in an environment where they can grow, but you’ll be expected to help others grow, too.
Our news operation is converged and is a quality-driven newsroom that combines digital, print and broadcast for The Gazette, TheGazette.com, KCRG-TV9 , kcrg.com, as well as several niche sites. Our company has a strong tradition of being independent and is employee owned. The majority of our news team is focused on enterprise reporting, and we have a strong spirit of collaboration with other news agencies. While we’re focused in Cedar Rapids -- Iowa’s second-largest city – we have bureaus in Des Moines and Iowa City, which is home to the University of Iowa. The region is rich with things to do outside of work hours.
Qualifications & requirements:
Ideal candidate will be a flexible, self-motivated, inquisitive, creative go-getter and problem-solver who works well on a team and has excellent communication and team-building skills. Candidate must be highly organized, a confident decision-maker and committed to ongoing improvement and coaching. Juggling multiple deadlines simultaneously should be expected, and you should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. An undergraduate degree in informatics, journalism, computer science, graphic design or a related course of study is required, and ideal candidate will have two to five years’ experience with visualizations. Understanding of journalism ethics and communication law is desired.
