Data Specialist

WCPO is hiring a Data Specialist to join our growing digital team.

A data specialist aggressively drives all aspects of digital newsroom database activities, from a local and cohesive perspective. This may include, but not be limited to, public and created databases, calendars and event listings, and statistics. Information should be gathered with the realization that one of a journalist's best devices for telling a great story is supporting data.

Key Activities:

  • Ensuring that the organization is the dominant source for community-based data, with a focus on utility.

  •  Developing databases, obtaining databases from public sources in a variety of formats and updating databases as necessary.

  • Presenting data on digital platforms in a variety of forms including calendars, user-searches, maps and geo-based information.

  • Analyzing data and preparing news stories based on the analysis.

  • Coordinating the gathering of data throughout the news organization.

  • Training staff members in the gathering, analysis and presentation of databases.

  • The Data Specialist is expected to work collaboratively with colleagues focused on breaking news, watchdog and grassroots journalism to provide audiences with a complete and comprehensive local news report.

  • Consults frequently with editors on stories. Stays on top of developing and continuing stories.

  • Take photographs or shoot video (or a combination thereof) as necessary to tell the story or as assigned by a supervising editor. Capable of using a camera equipped with still and video capabilities.

  • Facilitating inclusive reporting and recognizing the role that User Generated Content can and should play in the development of the news organization's data strategy.

  • Monitoring competitors' Web sites and TV/radio broadcasts as well as phones, e-mail and social networking accounts (e. g. Twitter, Facebook) to ensure the most comprehensive, competitive coverage.

  • Meeting performance measurements and metrics as specified by the Editor.

  • Actively participating with newsroom leadership to align work and organizational resources with strategic goals.

  • Working with other Scripps employees with similar job responsibilities/titles to share content, ideas, systems, work flows and best practices seamlessly.

  • Maintaining positive working relationships with teams in all areas of the newsroom.

  • Work with third party partner data teams to optimize data collection, analysis and reporting on digital platforms.

Education & Experience/Certifications

  • Typically a BS/BA in related discipline.

  • Generally 2-5 years of experience in related field.

Skills & Abilities

  • Must be able to read, manipulate and analyze databases in various formats.

  • Must be familiar with database publication applications, especially Caspio, but also be aware of applications such as Google, ManyEyes, Simile Timelines, Wordle and Swivel.

  • Must have knowledge of search engine optimization and how it can be applied to the presentation of databases.

  • Must thoroughly understand the fundamentals of news reporting, including issues involving privacy, libel and ethics.

  • Must be very familiar with issues of access to government records and expert in state open records laws.

  • Must be aware of industry trends and best practices involving database journalism and online databases.

  • Must be a self-starter, capable of demonstrating strong news judgment with minimal supervision.

  • Must have strong editing and writing skills.

  • Must have strong working knowledge of Associated Press style.

  • Must demonstrate attention to detail in both word editing and coding for electronic publication.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) as well as have working knowledge of web publishing tools and HTML.

  • Must have knowledge of social networking applications, story commenting process and other audience interaction tools.

  • Must be a multi-tasker who can perform well under deadline pressure and successfully meet deadlines.

  • Must have strong skills in time management and setting priorities.

  • Must exhibit high standards of accuracy and fairness.

WCPO is considered a pioneer of local live television. Its call letters were originally assigned to a Scripps radio station in Cincinnati to designate its relationship with The Cincinnati Post. The station adopted the letters in 1949 when it went on the air as the company's third television station. WCPO has received the Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast, Best Television Spot News Reporting in the 1995 Sigma Delta Chi Awards, and Best of the Best Sweepstakes Award in the National Association of Broadcaster's Service to Children's Award. WCPO went online in August 1996, was the first Cincinnati entity to have updated news over the Internet, and the first Cincinnati station to stream all of its newscasts.
