Economic Development Reporter

Economic Development Reporter with an investigative interest

The official listing for this job is below. But we also wanted to emphasize that this person will be a key player in our Watchdog Report coverage. We have a Central New York approach – and that includes the Southern Tier of New York State and up and through Ithaca. The world of economic development, particularly endeavors sweetened by government seed money, in many communities consists of broken promises or deals that never were well thought out. Even if there were no direct government grants, communities often will waive decades of property tax payments to lure businesses to open. We want this reporter to become an expert in this type of reporting.

Who should apply? Those with experience in this area would be prized. But, if you are a relatively new municipal or county government reporter (say, two or three years of experience) and you have the ideas but haven’t been able to pursue investigative stories, please consider us. Our editors will partner with you and you will get the tools you need.

We are looking for an economic development reporter to write deep stories about jobs, businesses and the economy in the Southern Tier of New York State. Stories would range from business profiles to economic development initiatives to the upcoming bids to open a full casino in our area. The reporter also would work with our watchdog team to do investigative reporting. This reporter would be based in Binghamton, N.Y. and work directly for the Press & Sun-Bulletin there, but also do broader reporting for Gannett’s Central New York Media group, which includes the Press & Sun-Bulletin as well as the Star-Gazette in Elmira and The Ithaca Journal.

Apply to Central New York executive editor Neill Borowski at nborowski@gannett.com. Please put   ECOIRE in the subject line and attach your cover letter, resume and examples of your work. Feel free to drop Neill a note with questions about the job.
