Based in Washington, DC, Stateline is a project of the Pew Charitable Trusts. Launched in 1998, it is a web-based source of analysis and intelligence from state capitals on a variety of issues. It produces 25 originally reported articles on key state policy issues every month, while also offering email alerts with original content and links to other sources identifying emerging issues and trends in the 50 states. Stateline also produces special reports, such as its annual State of the States series, and intensive, ongoing coverage of major events—e.g., how states are responding to ongoing fiscal pressures. Stateline’s readership includes thousands of state officials, policy makers, business leaders, journalists, students of state government and ordinary citizens. The content appears at www.pewstates.org/stateline, and is distributed via news outlets including USA Today, Huffington Post, McClatchy-Tribune Information Services and Digital First Media newspapers, among others.
This position is part of a team of experienced writers and editors who cover trends and key developments in state policy and politics for Stateline. The demographics officer/writer will focus on demographic, social and economic trends that are reshaping cities and states. This content will help state leaders put some of their most pressing policy questions into context and alert them to emerging challenges and opportunities – in short, an understanding of how and why it matters where you live. The writer is responsible for conceiving, researching, analyzing data, and writing content that is compelling, thorough and analytical. The staff writer also will adapt to the use of digital reporting tools to create content for the website.
This position reports to the Executive Editor, who is based in Washington, DC.
- Conceive and write big-picture articles and series on state policy developments relating to demographic developments and trends in the states.
- Develop expertise and a wide array of contacts on specific subjects.
- Identify data or content for multimedia and data-driven stories.
- Collaborate with Pew’s researchers and policy analysts to surface emerging issues in this subject area and write stories that reach, engage, inform and influence state policy.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- At least eight years of directly related practical writing experience and demonstrated knowledge of demographics and expertise with Census Bureau data required.
- Computer-assisted reporting skills including Excel, SQL Server or MySQL, SAS or Stata, R or SPSS, and ArcGIS or other mapping software.
- Track record of producing accurate content and analytical articles on tight deadlines. Clear, effective writing style.
- Excellent interviewing skills, grammar and command of AP style required.
- Understanding of state and national government as they relate to demographics issues.
- Experience with social media.
- Ability to think strategically and creatively, juggle multiple priorities, adjust to changing circumstances, organize time efficiently, stay attentive to details, and identify resources for projects.
- Capacity to fit into a creative, fast-paced, and highly professional corporate culture which emphasizes excellence, collegiality and teamwork. Accustomed to working as a member of a team and individually to meet goals.
It is anticipated that the individual in this position will travel occasionally within the U.S.
