Investigative Reporter

The Austin American-Statesman is looking for an investigative reporter to produce compelling watchdog journalism by digging into Central Texas institutions – from government to business to sports to arts and entertainment -- and holding them accountable to the public.

Investigative experience is paramount. Strong analytical skills are key; facility with database analysis is a big plus. Candidates should have a keen interest in telling stories in digital formats as well as more conventional print presentations. Knowledge of open records law and procedures would be helpful. Tenacity, patience and rigor are important attributes for the job.

The Statesman’s investigative team is self-edited, so candidates should be able to give and take constructive feedback on story ideas, first drafts and near-complete packages. Must be comfortable line-editing your peers’ work and collaborating with visual and data journalists on the team.

This is not a projects team exclusively. Like other reporters on staff, we do projects, but our mission is to regularly produce the kind of accountability journalism that our audience expects from the top news source in Texas’ capital city.

Candidates should be curious, open to various viewpoints, well-read and have a social conscience. They should have a thorough understanding of how society works and expertise in the history, events, issues and trends in one or more areas of coverage. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus.


Minimum Education/Experience: Some college and at least 10 years daily journalism experience. This may include experience gained through school publications and internships.
