Graphics & Data Visualization Developer

The Information Graphics & Data Visualization Developer is a member of BU’s integrated editorial design team, an award-winning group of journalists and designers charged with telling the stories of a top research university. This position is responsible for gathering and analyzing complex statistical data, and identifying and executing optimal formats such as interactive charts and maps to make that data visually compelling and meaningful to visitors of BU’s digital channels.

An ideal candidate has statistical analysis, data visualization, database, web programming and writing skills.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty, journalists, designers, and editors to find and produce accurate and compelling stories with consumable and compelling data visuals in a wide variety of digital formats.

  • Develop interactive graphics and digital tools for device-agnostic delivery

  • Leverage best practices and latest trends in visual communication

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and experience in related field required, though we are happy to consider candidates with a wide range of professional backgrounds, including journalism, computer science, and graphic design;

  • Strong knowledge in relational and document-based data stores like MySQL or Postgres;

  • Expertise with statistical analysis and data visualization tools like SPSS, R, Tableau and JavaScript libraries

  • Knowledge of best practices, current tools, and frameworks (ex. D3.js, Raphael, Recline, Rickshaw) for developing ways to display and interact with data;

  • Basic understanding of general programming languages like PHP, Python, and Ruby;

  • Comfort with HTML, CSS, and Sass or Less;

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Driven to experiment with technology for the sake of storytelling

Ideally, you also:

  • Are able to incorporate motion and video elements

  • Have 3D rendering and iconography skills

  • Have familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects.)

  • Have familiarity with WordPress or other web content management systems

  • Have prior experience with data visualization

  • Enjoy working with a team in a fast paced-environment and effectively use downtime.
