Database Developer Dallas Morning News Oct. 13, 2009

The Dallas Morning News seeks a database developer to join its newsroom, the 6th largest in the nation with a robust tradition of watchdog journalism. The ideal candidate is curious, creative and skilled in the latest technologies of non-linear storytelling. He/she will be responsible for developing new content for DallasNews.com, including dynamic maps and graphics, searchable databases and other alternative ways of presenting news and information.

This is a new position, and the database developer will be expected to work not only with existing platforms but also to explore how to innovate the newsroom’s online news and information efforts. This person would also be responsible for maintaining and updating areas on DallasNews.com that house data.

    The person we are looking for must:
  • Have at least one year of experience with one of the modern web development frameworks (Django or Ruby on Rails)
  • Understand how to use one of the open-source database managers, such as MySQL or Postgres
  • Understand HTML/CSS and have basic design skills
  • Be comfortable working in a fast-paced newsroom environment and have a deep understanding of journalistic concepts
  • Be able to work across departments and with a variety of online expertise
  • Have good management skills and be able to develop a project through its entire lifecycle
  • Be able to interpret editorial needs in the context of technical requirements
