Who can become a member of IRE
Return to IRE MembershipUpdate: On June 7, 2008, IRE members attending the annual membership meeting approved an amendment to open associate membership in the organization to those who are engaged in reporting or editing on a part-time basis.
The classes of membership are:
Professional
Professional class is limited to persons substantially engaged in reporting and/or editing in either print, broadcast or online. This includes those engaged full-time in a free-lancing capacity. (voting privileges)
Two-year U.S. fee: $110
Three-year U.S. fee: $160
Four-year U.S. fee: $210
($80 if you want The IRE Journal mailed to you - sorry no multiple year discounts available with this option - includes U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico)
Academic
Academic class is limited to persons engaged full time in research or teaching in the field of journalism. (voting privileges).
Two-year U.S. fee: $110
Three-year U.S. fee: $160
Four-year U.S. fee: $210

Associate
Associate membership is available to individuals engaged part-time in reporting or editing and to former journalists or journalism educators (who were former professional or academic class members of IRE ) now engaged in another occupation (full-time) other than journalism. (No voting privileges)

Four-year U.S. fee: $210

Retiree
Retired from full-time position in print, broadcast or online, journalism education or research. (voting privileges)

Students — U.S. or International
Student Associates are currently pursuing a degree in journalism. Upon graduation, Student Members may renew their membership at the Student price, for 2 more years. Former professional members returning to college (full or part time) have the option of renewing their membership at the student level, but lose their voting privileges. (No voting privileges)
