Terms of use
This site is published by Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. (IRE), a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization located at
138 Neff Annex, Missouri School of Journalism, Columbia, MO 65211. Contents of this site, including all site and section
names, logos, other graphics, organized listings, presentation strategies, interface design and other design elements, are
covered by trademarks, copyrights and other intellectual and trade property rights, held jointly or separately by IRE and
the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting (NICAR). All rights are reserved. Contributing writers also may hold
rights to some material.
Material on this site may not be copied, mirrored, cataloged, displayed simultaneously with another site in part or in
whole, nor may any of its sub-programs be accessed from any page without the express written consent of the appropriate
rights holder. Use of this site contractually obliges each user to these terms. News media may use portions of the content
of this site and refer to its contents with appropriate credit given to Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc.
Republication rights inquiries may be made by sending e-mail to republication@ire.org
Privacy policy
Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. (IRE) respects the privacy of visitors to our site. Please read this privacy
policy carefully so that you understand our privacy practices. If you have questions about the policy, please contact us
at webprivacy@ire.org.
Children should always get permission from their parents before sending any information about themselves such as their
names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers over the Internet, to us or to anyone else. We won't knowingly allow anyone
under 13 to provide us any personally identifying information.
Log files and cookies
We use IP addresses to analyze trends, administer the site, track user visits to our site, and gather broad technical
information for aggregate use. IP addresses are not linked to personally identifiable information.
Our Lotus Domino Web server uses non-persistent cookies to enable members to log onto the members-only portions of our site.
This cookie is temporary - lasting only 30 minutes - and is needed for technical reasons such as providing seamless
navigation. For example, IRE's members-only pages use the non-persistent cookies to allow members to navigate through
the pages without requiring them to log onto each new page they wish to visit.
See More About Cookies.
Personal information
The only personally identifying information that IRE gathers online is information that visitors to our site provide
voluntarily, for example, when they apply for membership, register for conferences, request e-mail updates, participate
in surveys, request to be in a directory, or seek to purchase educational materials, including books, or other merchandise
sold by IRE, or seek to purchase data from IRE and/or the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting (NICAR).
We also may use the information we collect to communicate with our members and/or former members. Except as otherwise
provided in this privacy policy, we will not sell, rent, or otherwise share personally identifying information about
visitors to our site without their consent. With the approval of the IRE Board of Directors, we occasionally share our
members' name and addresses in one-time nonelectronic form with other nonprofit journalism organizations that want to
notify our members of educational opportunities.
You may review, update, or change your membership profile online by visiting the "member login" area on our Web site
at www.ire.org/cgi-bin/formengine.cgi?form=change.
Listserv subscribers should note that all messages to IRE and NICAR listservs are archived and available to IRE members
though the IRE Web site. These archives may include e-mail addresses and any attached names.
Security
IRE takes every precaution to protect our users' information. When users submit sensitive information via the
Web site, their information is protected both online and off-line.
When our registration or order forms ask a user to enter sensitive information (such as credit card number),
that information is protected with SSL, the best encryption software in the industry. While on a secure page,
such as our order form, the lock icon at the bottom of Web browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet
Explorer becomes locked, as opposed to un-locked, or open, when just "surfing."
While we use SSL encryption to protect sensitive information online, we also do everything in our power to protect user
information off-line. All of our users' information - not just the sensitive information mentioned above - is restricted
in our offices. Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, a billing clerk or a
membership service representative) are granted access to personally identifiable information.
If you have any questions about the security at our Web site, e-mail a question to webprivacy@ire.org.
Information releases
We may occasionally release information about our visitors when release is appropriate to comply with the law or to
protect the rights, property or safety of visitors to our site, the public or IRE. In the unlikely event that IRE or
substantially all of its assets are acquired by another organization or company, information on our visitors would be
among the transferred assets.
Information gathered by IRE on our Web site is stored within IRE-controlled databases on servers maintained in protected
environments. However, no physical or electronic security system is impenetrable. We cannot guarantee the security of our
servers or databases, nor can we guarantee that information you supply won't be intercepted while being transmitted to
us over the Internet.
Links
This Web site contains links to other sites. Please be aware that IRE and NICAR are not responsible for the privacy
practices of such other sites. We encourage those leaving our site to read the privacy statements of each and every Web
site that collects personally identifiable information. This privacy statement applies solely to information collected
by this Web site.
Notification of changes
The Web is an evolving medium. If we decide to change our privacy policy, we will post those changes on our home
page so users are aware of what information we collect, how we use it, and under what circumstances, if any, we
disclose it.
