Connect the dots: New tools visualize questionable conduct by a web of charities
Anglen had spent months collecting data on and monitoring the questionable activities of a "web of charities." He found a network of charities that was basically transferring "donations" to each other "to pay salaries, cars, mortgages, land purchases, travel, furniture and other perks." Anglen relied heavily on the use of 990 forms during his investigation. By working with his data team and by the use of social networking software showcased at a 2007 IRE conference, they were able to present to the public a user-friendly visual of the fraudulent web of charities.
