Members will be asked to consider approving an amendment to IRE’s articles of incorporation during the membership meeting, 6 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the annual conference in Miami. The amendment would expand the definition of IRE’s associate membership to include individuals engaged in reporting and editing part-time.
IRE’s Board of Directors supports the proposed amendment, which it believes to be in the best interests of the organization and recommends its adoption by the membership. The board believes that the amendment would address the growing number of part-time journalists who are engaged in investigative reporting, particularly on the Web, and who would benefit from associate membership in the organization. (Click here for a full explanation and the wording of the amendment in .PDF format).
A vote by two-thirds of the members who attend the annual membership meeting is required to amend the Articles of Incorporation.
Please preview the proposed 2008-09 budget for Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc. The Board of Directors will vote on the budget during its meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday at the 2008 IRE Conference. The fiscal year begins July 1. (Click to download .PDF file)
The budget calls for income and spending to be roughly the same as this year, which we forecast to finish with a small net revenue.
The proposed budget funds the continuation of our core training programs — computer-assisted reporting bootcamps and on-the-road workshops.
We will continue to roll out new training designed to help newsrooms take advantage of the Web. And we expect the database library to continue to serve newsrooms at a pace equal to, or greater, than the past year.
Thanks to the generosity of our members and other donors, our endowment has climbed above $3.7 million. Interest from the endowed funds provides a steady stream of income that helps IRE fulfill its mission.
The budget and the endowment will also be discussed during the annual membership meeting at the Miami conference at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 7.
The 2008 IRE Conference, June 5-8, will offer special events with Miami flair.

IRE has launched a Facebook page called "Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE and NICAR)," currently 144-strong and growing. (Who knows? If we get 1,000 fans, maybe Executive Director Mark Horvit will add a picture to his profile.)
The Facebook site is not intended to replace www.ire.org or member communication via Listserv or e-mail. It's just one more way to stay in touch with IRE, connect with colleagues and make IRE part of your online identity.
