Summary	A record 112 children died in 1995 under the care of Washington state social workers or shortly after the state withdrew services. Nearly all the child deaths were ruled accidental or natural, but a Seattle Times study found at least one third of them might have been preventable. The children who needed the most protection from parental abuse and neglect -- those on the active caseload of Child Protective Service -- were more than four times as likely to die as the state's other children. Infants under CPS care were eight times as likely to die of "SIDS" compared with other infants.
