Summary	CBC-TV Winnepeg reported that "A world-renowned Arctic scientist had a secret. Some 20 years ago, he was a foster father to a 12-year-old girl. The girl was sexually assaulted by the scientist repeatedly at his home and at his place of work - a Canadian government research station far up north... The scientist was eventually charged with sexually assaulting her and he plead guilty to the charges. .. The scientist said he would only plead guilty if he could delay his sentencing and go on an international research project in the Arctic.... (which was allowed) The Canadian government, the scientist's employer, knew that he was pleading guilty to sexual assault charges but they didn't bother to check what the circumstances were. If a government employee is facing criminal charges, the government policy is to investigate.... A government official admitted to us that the scientist's status in the community played a role - as to why they believed him and why the continued to pay his salary and pension after he plead guilty. After he was sentenced, he was fired from his job. The victim was upset with his special treatment and so was the opposition in government...."
