Hidden Taxes
This investigation found that San Diego was funneling utilities money out of the general tax fund and using it to fill in gaps in the city's budget. Whenever the city needed more money, it would simply raise sewer and water fees. As a result, millions of dollars that should have been used to fix and maintain the sewer system were used to balance the budget.

What's Race Got To Do With It?
"Despite a crime wave, Cincinnati's cops pull back, underscoring the stakes in the conflict over racial profiling," reports Time Magazine. The story points to figures that show similar number of arrests before and after the "violent confrontation in April [2001] between mostly black protesters and mostly white police." The analysis looks at a dilemma: "Are we to have a low-crime society, in which cops are violent cowboys, or a high-crime culture, in which cops can't stop a mob without written Justice Department approval?" A major finding is that frequency of racial profiling is difficult to be determined, since most cities do not collect traffic-stop data, and other are reluctant to make it public.

The 1998 IRE National Conference (Kansas City) Show and Tell Tape #1 is the first in a nine-part series. This tape includes: 1.) Darcy Spears (KVBC-Las Vegas) "Taken for a Ride". Taxi drivers getting kickbacks for taking clients to certain bars/stripclubs. 2.) J.W. August/Valerie Stapes (KGTV-San Diego). A follow-up investigation about university diplomas for sale. Documents passed off as though they're from Columbia University in New York City. Finds prominent city official using one as a reference. 3.) ?... Credit card lenders - Providian Visa 4.) Ken Miguel (KGO-TV - San Francisco) "Herbal Supplements" Investigation into supplements such as "Metabolife" that use ma huang and other harmful ingredients in these supposedly safe, natural pills. 5.) Chris Cantergiani (WSB-Atlanta) Investigation into Dekalb County employee who's getting paid by taxpayers to spend large portions of his day at home or on personal business. 6.) Julie Jacoby (WCCO-Minneapolis). After an accident, a taxi driver files lawsuits against the other party, then pays others to falsify documents that would notify the person of the court date. The driver ends up winning thousands of dollars when his opponent fails to show up in court. They don't even know about the lawsuit. 7.) David Schechter (WDAF-Kansas City) Focuses on Missouri's Methamphetamine problem by showing how easy it can be to buy drugstore ingredients despite recent restrictions.

The 1993 IRE TV Award Winners and Finalists Tape is a compilation of 5 investigative stories. 1.) "Crossing the Line," by 5th Estate, Canadian Broadcasting Company. CBC reveals how women athletes face a lifetime of sexual harassment from male coaches in sports clubs, universities and national teams who demand intimate relations after coaching them to success. See#9984. 2.) "Sewage Sludge," KGTV, San Diego uncovers the illegal dumping of processed human waste onto farmers fields. The stories exposed dangers to human health and the incompetence of city officials. See # 9635. 3.) "Dionne Warwick," Day One, ABC News reveals how the foundation started by Dionne Warwick raised millions of dollars for AIDS research but through mismanagement and extravagant expenses very little went to the charities.The foundation eventually closed its doors with huge debts and 62 creditors. See # 9760. 4.) "In Our Children's Food," Frontline PBS and WGBH, Boston explores the risks of agricultural pesticides and the failure of the government to certify the risks of a number of pesticides which are in widespread use. An investigation finds that the suppression and politicization of a key report about the toxic risks to children. See # 9886. 5.) "Autistic Abuse / Silent Victims," Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) Alberta News exposes the abuse of autism patients at a special government-funded home; finds secret documents that indicate government agencies knew of the abuse but didn't act. Authorities closed the home the day after the story ran. See # 9632.
