Unfair Game
Texas high school athletics rules prohibit students from transferring from district to district for athletic purposes, but that hasn’t stopped coaches and administrators from openly flouting the rules to assemble state championship-caliber teams as part of an underground recruiting system that puts athletics over academics. WFAA investigative reporter Brett Shipp's reports showed how improper recruiting helped Dallas' Kimball Knights build back-to-back state champ basketball teams, and how former Dallas Cowboy Deion Sanders' new school, Prime Prep Academy, also drew in blue-chip players against the rules.

OSU Scandals
An investigation of a football coach from OSU that covered up NCAA violations and knowingly allowed star atheletes to play in games even though he knew they may be ineligible for competition. The university attempted to dismiss Tressel's violation as a minor oversight and suspended him for two games.

Betrayal of Trust
The Orange County Register detailed the culture of exploitation that surrounded young female gymnasts who have fueled the sport's success since the early 1980's. Specifically, the Register investigation revealed the coach of the 1984 U.S. Olympic team had sexual relations with three young gymnasts he coached.

The Oregonian discovered that while most 30-year employees at the University of Oregon were receiving a public pension averaging $54,000 a year, a former University of Oregon coach and athletic director was receiving $41,000 per month.

This five-day series chronicles the experiences with youth sports of high school and college athletes and coaches. By establishing "baseline data" that has been previously unreported, Dispatch reporters found a "corrupted" sports program overrun with angry parents and practices that cause severe injury to young athletes. Rising costs and financial competitions are added pressures to the industry.

Failing our Athletes: The Sad State of Sports in Boston Public Schools
This series examined the state of athletics in the Boston public school district. The amount of problems discovered was both shocking and disappointing. Some of the discovered problems were the program was “underfunded compared to cities of similar size, staffing problems, poor facilities, safety of the athletes, and competency of many coaches”.

Secrecy 101
"Universities hide information about their athletics departments behind a student-privacy law designed to keep grades private." Further, it hides athletes, who have done a number of unethical and some illegal activities. Also, coaches are using the law to hide their own bad behavior. All this information stunned the senator who created the law and he believes the "institutions are putting their own meaning into the law."

"Coaches' Salaries 2009: College Football Special Report"
The average pay for college football coaches has increased 46 percent in the last three years. Amid a floundering economy, cutbacks have spread across higher education budgets, but college football coaches continue to see a rise in their salaries. In 2009, 25 coaches made at least $2 million, which is double that of their salaries just two years ago.

This series focuses on, “the biggest and best football conference, looked at the money brought in and the issues raised by the rush to be successful, the disparity between coaching salaries and the scholarship money afforded the athletes, what top athletes might be worth in an open market, and the creative efforts universities go to in order to fund athletic programs.”

Penn State's football coach Joe Paterno is the winningest coach in Division I history despite the many criminal charges against his program's players over the years. A database was created using computer assisted reporting to analyze players' Pennsylvania court records over the last seven years.
