Danger Zone
The Gazette investigation found that nearly half the fatal accidents on Interstate 80 in Iowa from 1994-2001 involved semi-trailer trucks. No other interstate in Iowa had a rate that high. Traffic counts are growing on a 60-70 mile stretch of I-80 in Eastern Iowa, where many of the semi-trailer trucks are concentrated. Despite the growth in traffic, state officials have no plans to improve safety by widening the highway because traffic counts are just shy of the threshold for widening the road.

Wrecks in Disguise
When a car or truck has been so badly damaged in a wreck that an insurance company declares it a total loss, you might think that would guarantee it a trip to the junkyard. Instead, a Consumer Reports investigation found that hundreds of thousands of these vehicles are rebuilt and sold to unwitting consumers. The report examines this murky enterprise, the safety threat to consumers and the nationwide system of flawed state title disclosure laws that allow consumers to be misled and cheated.

Explorer Has Higher Rate of Tire Accidents
An analysis by the Washington Post reveals that the "Ford Explorer has a higher rate of tire-related accidents than other sport-utility vehicles," regardless of the tire brand. The findings suggests that there is something about the design of the Explorer that contributes to accidents. This may mean that Firestone Tires are not entirely to blame for the recent fatal accidents. The study found that even if Explorers were equipped with Goodyear Tires, they were still more like to have tire-related accidents.
