The Prosecution of Governor Siegelman
Seven U.S. Attorneys were fired in December 2006 by the Bush Justice Department not because of poor performance, but because of the refusal to engage in politically-driven prosecutions. Former Governor of Alabama Don Siegelman was convicted of bribery and sentence to serve seven years in jail.

The story reveals that foundations pump billions of dollars into local and state government every year, and points to specific examples when donors have attempted to reshape governmental programs and initiatives. The article looks at how the cash flow from foundations to government has been increasing since 1975. "Foundations are positioned to influence the public sector in a whole new way," but they " rarely have the standing and legitimacy to act as a driving force for reform within government," the magazine reports.

Using a checking account in his own name, Carey used money donated for a civil rights benefit luncheon to pay for an attorneys retreat at a plush Tucson resort. (July 16, Aug. 10 & Dec. 28, 1995)
