  • Ketek

    Dr. David Ross, who reviewed the safety of an antibiotic called Ketek for the Food and Drug Administration, tells the CBS Evening News that he warned them the drug was a "timebomb". Yet, the concerns were kept quiet, and the drug was approved, enjoying sales of $193 million worth in 2005. The drug's list of side effects, including possible liver problems, have been added to continuously since 2004. Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) is conducting an investigation into the situation, and there is another congressional investigation of the drug and "possible misappropriation of CIA funding."

    The story concerned the short life of Evelyn Miller, a young girl found slain after she disappeared from her home near Floyd,IA. The investigation revealed a life of neglect, including being overlooked by the Department of Human Resources. The reporters also investigated the extensive search for the girl in the days that followed her disappearance.

    The Quad City Times conducts a computer-assisted investigation of juvenile crime. The series focused on four areas; police, prevention, prison and prosecution. A review of juvenile court records from 1993 revealed that over 61 per cent of the kids live in low-income areas; these pockets had a low median income; the unemployment rates are high, and that rotating judges leave gaps in the juvenile proceedings, July - 10-24, 1994.
