Clerk's Office Corruption: Following the Money
Investigations into Shelby County Clerk, Maureen Bowers, revealed she accepted personal payment to to register vehicles for customers in the Hispanic community. Bowers bribed other officials to verify false identities in order for illegals to acquire vehicle registration.

An Inconvenient truth: Investigative Stories by Andy Meek
This is a collection of investigative pieces reporter Andy Meek did for the Daily News (Memphis, TN) during the last half of 2006. His election story summarized "the inability of local elected officials to prepare properly for the longest ballot in Shelby County history." "Major Hollywood Studio Eyes Memphis" broke the news that Memphis was being considered as a production hub. Also included is a story on property tax overpayments and three stories that provided "exclusive details about a real estate deal that figured prominently in the arrest of two Memphis City Council members."

Day Care & Tax Dollars
The state of Tennessee gives $82 million annually to Shelby County to pay the cost of day care for low-income families but few of those dollars reach the children. A Commercial Appeal investigation found that Shelby County day cares use state and federal funds to pay their executives six-figure salaries or to fund personal trips to Europe and Africa.

Accidents Waiting to Happen
A look at car accidents and what's causing them in Shelby County. Rural roads account for 60% of all traffic-related deaths. Intersection crashes on East State Road 44 are common due to "mixing traffic" situation. Inexperienced 16 & 17-year-old drivers are in more traffic accidents than older drivers. Not paying attention is the cause of most traffic accidents. Men crash more often than women.

Welfare: The Challenge of Change
The Commercial Appeal reports that "while details are far from settled, the broad outlines of welfare reform - spending caps, time limits, work requirements and block grants - promise big changes in Shelby County, where one of every four families with children under 18 draws a monthly welfare check. But welfare is more than cash. Many members of Congress consider food stamps, commodities, school lunches, housing subsidies, job training, child care and health insurance as forms of welfare...."
