  • Scout's Honor

    The goal was to investigate the issue of sexual abuse inside Boy Scout organizations in both Canada and the United States by exploring one particular case that touched both sides of the border. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Los Angeles Times teamed up to investigate the case of Richard Turley while also looking at the scope of the wider problem in both countries and the impact on individuals affected.

  • Spy Drones Aiding Police

    Government surveillance drones have been used, with no public notice, to assist local police departments inside the U.S. find suspects and conduct. A Los Angeles Times/ Tribune Co. Washington Bureau investigation uncovered for the first time over two dozen uses of the Department of Homeland Security drones to help local law enforcement in North Dakota, where two of the department's nine Predator B aircraft are based.

  • Scout's Honor

    An investigation of the issue of sexual abuse inside Boy Scouts organizations both in Canada and the United States. CBC News and The LA Times uncovered that nearly 80 Boy Scout leaders have been convicted of sex related crimes since the 1950s.

  • "Grading the Teachers"

    The LA Times studied schools throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District. Using gain-score analysis, data linking standardized test scores and various evaluation techniques, the Times identified the "most and least effective" teachers and schools in the district. Reporters examined schools ranked high by the API standard, only to find inconsistencies in student performance.

  • "Innocents Betrayed"

    More than 250 children under the watch of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services died during the span of 19 months. The Times found that most of the deaths spurred little investigation even though many "involved faulty case management."

  • The All About Me Mayor

    Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is known for holding endless press conferences, flying around the world and campaigning for presidential candidates. The author, using a California Public Records Request, received the mayor's work schedule from may through July and found that Villaraigosa had spend only 11 percent of his time on "real, roll up your sleeves work."

  • Danger in Tow

    Los Angeles Times investigated U-Haul International. They looked at the high number of towing accidents that occur while towing U-Haul trailers. U-Haul trailers were not kept up to standard and maintenance was poor. When faced with law suits from injured customers, "U-Haul has repeatedly lost, altered or discarded truck and trailer parts" which would have been evidence.

  • Juice vs Justice

    According to the Los Angeles Times, Las Vegas Justices rule on matters in cases where they have received donations from lawyers or defendants, without disclosing their financial interests or relationships, and without withdrawing when a conflict of interest exists. The Los Angeles Times reports "A common perception among a dozen out-of-state lawyers interviewed about their experiences in Nevada courtrooms is that justice in Las Vegas is just another form of legalized gambling." The Times reported this series because more than a quarter of all visits to Las VEgas are made by Southern Californians, and over a third of alll business relocating to Nevada come from California.

  • The Enclave

    David Kelly and Gary Cohn of the Los Angeles Times investigate the failure of public agencies to check the activities of a religious sect on the border of Utah and Arizona. The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS), an offshoot of Mormonism is the sect. Its members have engaged in polygamy, sexual abuse, spousal abuse and child abuse with no government intervention to curb these crimes.
