Air Scare
This series includes the breaking news of a terrorist bomber and the advancement of the story by CBS News. The terrorist bomber failed to “fully detonate the deadly ingredients of a powerful bomb on board a flight headed to Detroit from Amsterdam”. The deadly ingredients of the bomb were undetected by security screening in Amsterdam and he had an active visa through June 2010.

This investigation by Grey, a free-lance writer, reveals how U.S. intelligence agencies are flying terrorist suspects to countries with poor human rights records to interrogate them. Though the American government denies allegations of using such "torture by proxy" tactics, confidential travel logs detail trips to Egypt, Syria and Uzbekistan where witnesses say the prisoners are tortured.

China Doll
This story reports that Katrina Leung, a businesswoman acted as a double agent for the FBI and the Chinese investigative agency. Reports indicate that she might have passed on at least two decades of investigative work. Leung apparently compromised the work of two top FBI agents while receiving payment from the Bureau for her work and at the same time revealing information about the FBI to the Chinese.

Series on 9-11 intelligence failures: The 9/11 terrorists the CIA should have caught (The hijackers we let escape); The informant who lived with the hijackers; The Saudi money trail; Charity and Terror
Newsweek investigates whether the CIA and FBI ignored critical clues that might have helped prevent the attacks. The first story looks at a case where the CIA tracked two suspected terrorists to an Al-Qaeda summit in Malaysia in 2000. These same two men later came to the U.S., lived in California and went on to hijack the plane that crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11. The report questions why the CIA didn't do more to stop these men, based on the information they had. The second story reports although one FBI informant was the hijackers' roommate, intelligence agencies still failed to recognize the threat. The third story reveals how an Saudi student in the U.S., Omar Al-Bayoumi, provided critical assistance to the two hijackers. The fourth story reports on how Saudi-based Islamic charities have been used to fund terrorist organizations around the world.

Explaining Terrorism
The Los Angeles Times provides explanations and warnings of the terror threat to the United States published before September 11, and further explanations and insights after the attacks about the methods and nature of the terror networks behind the attacks. Major findings include: the Millennium bomb plot aroused fears of sleeping terrorism cells in the U.S.; two months before the attacks reporters documents the high level of threat from sleeper cells throughout the West; after the attack the Times identified Mohammed Atta as the leader of the plot; a major terrorist threat was exposed in Western Europe and Bosnia; tied September 11 hijackers to the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole; foretold problems for Islamic charities; detailed the warnings authorities missed prior to September 11; discovered bin Laden's extensive use of aircraft and secret U.S. fears as early as 1996 that terrorists might use crop dusters as weapons.

Al Qaeda Terrorist Dupes FBI, Army
The News & Observer tells the story of Ali Mohamed, a double agent, who served both "in the heart of the U.S. military at Fort Bragg and in the inner circle of Osama bin Laden's Islamic fundamentalist terrorists' network." Mohamed was among those arrested after the 1998 attacks on the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. In the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, the story is used to exemplify how a terrorist can harness "the openness and modern technology of secular Western society, transforming them into weapons to be turned on America." Mohamed - who spent two decades working for the Egyptian Islamic Jihad and had three years of training and service with the U.S. Special Forces - acquired sensitive documents and passed them along to radical Muslims, the newspaper reports. Though the CIA, the FBI and the Defense Department knew all about Mohamed, they failed to stop him from playing a central role in the 1998 bombings.

The package of stories reveals the covered-up findings of a federal task force that was originally created to investigate law-enforcement corruption in Arizona, but several years later was hastily disbanded. Conroy examines how the suppressed cases are connected to the suspected murder of a former Customs supervisor.
