Secrets and Lies: bin Laden, Damra and the Birth of Terror in America
This investigation uncovered the strong ties between Fawaz Damra, a seemingly peaceful spiritual leader of Ohio's largest mosque, and Osama bin Laden. The investigators found that before moving to Ohio, Damra headed a radical mosque in Brooklyn, to which the people behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing belonged. Furthermore, he was directly involved in fund-raising for terrorist "charities." Damra's charity was the predecessor of Al Qaeda, and gave bin Laden a foothold in America.

What Went Wrong; How The U.S Missed The Clues; How Safe Now?
This set of three stories delves into the huge system failure hidden behind the 9/11 attacks. What follows is an account of Bush's first reactions to a disclosure that he had been warned earlier about the possibility of Al Qaeda hijackings in the United States. And after detailing the four key mistakes instrumental in the U.S missing the clues and not knowing what to do, the Newsweek team finds that the security system is broken and much is left undone. Also included are opinion pieces by a former CIA Chief and an anonymous FBI Field Agent.

Terrorism Series
Newsweek investigates the global reach of the terrorist network Al Qaeda, how its "cell" structure worked, how it laundered money and how its leader Osama bin Laden attempted to obtain weapons of mass destruction. The first part of the series, published in February 2001, predicts that the threat posed by bin Laden is growing. The second one, two weeks after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, reveals details of a possible 20th hijacker involved in the tragedy. Some of the online stories examine possible links between the WTC suspects and USS Cole bombers, and reveal that FBI has identified more than 1,000 people with suspected terrorist ties inside the U.S. The series documents "numerous intelligence and policy failures that kept U.S. authorities from detecting the terror plot being hatched under their noses."
