Pawlenty's Pardon
Jeremy Giefer was charged with raping his own daughter and then received a pardon for a 1993 sex-crime conviction for raping a 14-year-old -- the mother of his latest alleged victim. City Pages revealed that Giefer wanted the pardon so his wife could open a daycare center in his home. Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty chaired the board which granted the pardon.

"Sexting DA"
AP reporter Ryan Foley revealed that prominent Wisconsin District Attorney Ken Kratz was sending harassing text messages to female victims; women whom he was supposed to be protecting. When the sexual harassment was reported to the authorities, "legal regulators and colleagues" kept the allegations private in an attempt to protect the reputation of the DA.

The investigation found that while the president was earning an extremely high salary, administrative costs at the school were rising. The school board ignored warnings from faculty, administrators, and students.

The Perfect Pension Fund
Florida's public pension system is not as perfect as it seems. The investigation finds a pattern of misleading statements and oversight failures by the agency that manages the pension funds, State Board of Administration. It also shows that the three elected officials who oversaw the agency, including Florida's former governor, ignored personal conflicts of interest and misled the public on the poor condition of the pension fund.

"The California Water Enforcers"
In this month-long, five-part series, Jim Holt investigated a water tax imposed on "tiny recession-battered towns" in California. After finding a "controversial" Memorandum of Understanding, Holt found that state legislators imposed million-dollar water fines that essentially taxed "the water we drink."

"Big payout, little oversight at NEIU"
After receiving a tip from a member of the Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit (NEIU) board, reporter Sarah Hofius Hall began investigating the retirement of Fred Rosetti, former executive director of the NEIU. She revealed that the board "blindly and quietly" removed caps on accrued vacation and sick days, which meant Rosetti would have received slightly more than half a million dollars in payouts upon retirement.

ArmorGroup Conflict of Interest
The Inspector General and his brother have a relationship where one helps the other and vice versa. The Inspector General was supposed to police the security contract at the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan, but was protecting is brother an executive at ArmorGroup. ArmorGroup is the company accused of wrongdoing and has continuously gotten away with it.
