Polygamy in Arizona
These stories are the latest in the investigation Dougherty began in 2002, which uncovered widespread sexual abuse within a religious society that coerces underage girls into polygamous unions with much older men. In these stories, Dougherty discovered that the sect was in the process of relocating to Eldorado, TX. He also found that the community is afflicted by a rare genetic disorder as a result of its history of inbreeding. Finally, the stories discuss the relationship between the state and the community, especially in the state-funded school district which employs a lot of community people.

Firm Beliefs
The idea for this story came to light during a murder investigation. WTVF uncovered evidence linking the child-abuse death of an 8-year-old boy in the Atlanta area to the teachings of his family's church. The church, located just outside of Nashville, was started by Christian diet guru Gwen Shamblin. Despite Shamblin's denials, the investigation uncovered church tapes that documented how she had instructed her followers to severely discipline their children. Among the tapes: a conference call in which the mother was applauded for locking her child in his room for days.

Vows of silence: The abuse of power in the papacy of John Paul II
This book exposes the Vatican's cover-up of sexual abuse by a powerful religious order favored by Pope John Paul II, the Legionaries of Christ. The order operates worldwide and was founded in Mexico by the Rev. Marcial Maciel Degollado, who has been accused by nine former members of abusing them when they were boys. Through the Legionaries of Christ, Degollado has ingratiated himself with the pope, insulated himself from scrutiny by having his followers take a personal oath to never criticize him or his decisions, and avoided investigation and prosecution.
