The Informants
In the package, "Terrorists for the FBI," Mother Jones exposed this pattern with in-depth pieces that drilled deep into what has become federal law enforcement's No. 1 priority. As a part of an 18-month investigation, reporter Trevor Aaronson pulled court documents of all 508 federal terrorism convictions since September 11, 2001, and interviewed everyone from undercover FBI informants to street agents, top bureau officials, and legal and terrorism experts. The investigation found that following 9/11, the FBI built a massive network of domestic informants -15,000 in all- many of them tasked with surveilling and infiltrating Muslim neighborhoods and institutions.

"Burning Rage"
This story covers the rising threat of eco-terrorists in the U.S. In May, 2005, John Lewis, Deputy Director of the FBI, testified on Capitol Hill that domestic terrorism by radical environmental groups such as the Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front were the biggest threat to American security. 60 Minutes set out to either prove or disprove Lewis' testimony and found that, indeed, such groups were responsible for a rising number of arson and bomb attacks.

Oliphant visited the West Virginia compound of William Pierce, leader of the white supremacist National Alliance. The story describes Pierce's efforts to get out his neo-Nazi message -- which is anti-Semitic and anti-every other ethnic group. The National Alliance is on the FBI's list of potential domestic terrorists.

From the contest entry summary: "The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reasoned that chemical plants would be a major terrorist target in the wake of Sept. 11 attacks. If ruptured, tanks storing catastrophic levels of chemicals could kill, injure or displace millions of Americans living in or around our largest cities. Similar events have transpired in the Serbo-Croatian-Bosnian wars in the 1990s, and domestic and foreign terrorists have claimed credit for attacking chemical tanks in the U.S. and Middle East."

Ordained by hate
The Joplin Globe reports on how "a sect of supremacists is sowing the seeds of racism in the farmlands of Southwest Missouri." The story depicts the radical beliefs preached by an extremist white-only group called Church of Israel. Women who fall into the organization's subculture are victimized as "breeders," and their children grow up without normal socialization, some becoming criminals in their adult lives, the reporter reveals. Another part of the investigative package discovers that the church owns nearly 1,400 acres in northeastern Vernon County in Missouri. Although the church has dropped its status as nonprofit, it still does not pay taxes on its property. A deed filed decades ago purports to give ownership over 411 acres to the Church of Christ, but the document turns out to be bogus.
