  • Unsafe, Unsound: School Construction Safety In Colorado

The Denver Post's series examined several failures that led to closure, for safety concerns, of a new $18.9 million elementary school in rural Northwestern Colorado town of Meeker- and the broader implications for school construction in the state. The DP demonstrated that the design-and-build firm made a series of mistakes and fought back when questioned, that a state official missed a glaring error in reviewing the project, and that the local school board allowed children to attend classes in the building for months, despite being warned about structural deficiencies.

  • "Schoool Radon"

The state of Pennsylvania does not require schools to test for radon, a cancer-causing chemical. In fact, the majority of school districts in the western part of the state had not "done any radon testing." Testing in other districts registered levels many times higher than the "EPA maximum safe level." One district that tested positive for radon did not share the information with parents.

  • Omaha in Black and White

One out of every three high school freshman in Omaha fail to graduate in four years, and the dropout problem is even worse for black youths. Findings include: graduation rates slide sharply as attendance drops; middle school grades track closely with graduation rates; students with poor test scores in elementary school are significantly less likely to graduate; few students who enter high school with both poor attendance and poor grades in 8th grade are successful, only 20% graduate on time

  • Weighing the Options

"Significant numbers of black students fled on low-performing school only to land at another one, and many neighborhoods with the worst schools have yet to see new, better schools open. We also found black and Latino enrollment declining in magnet schools, the oldest schools of choice in the district."

Passaic elementary school bought real estate property from "Richard Doren, a reputed organized crime associate and ex-convict." The deal was proposed and encouraged by a board member who owed Doren money. The plot was next to an adult theater and a cut rate hotel.
