Fruit of the Poisonous Tree
This fourteen-part investigative series revealed how a prostitution and human trafficking ring could flourish in rural Iowa towns. The series also details the story of one 13-year-old runaway Minnesota girl was entrapped in the ring and was forced into prostitution. A ring operator, who was being beaten by her live-in boyfriend, helped rescue the girl from prostitution and helped her make her way to safety. Law enforcement officials first missed opportunities to help this girl and break the ring. But they finally solved who was behind the ring and assisted in a dozen human trafficking convictions.

Children for Sale
Dateline investigated the child sex trade in Cambodia. The story led to the prosecution of a Canadian man for purchasing sex with children there. The investigative team worked with a human rights group whose sting operation led to the arrest of pimps and the rescue of three dozen girls.

Modern Day Slavery
This series of investigations revealed that in the last four years, officials have prosecuted five cases of slavery in Southwest Florida and that an estimated 20 to 50 thousand people a year are smuggled into the U.S. as indentured servants. These "slaves" are abused or mistreated and many women are forced into prostitution. Some women are tricked into coming into America under the illusion that they are being recruited as models.

Trafficked for the Military
Using hidden camera, WJW-TV reveals that U.S. military police and courtesy patrol officers have been protecting South Korean brothels and illegal traffic of women. The trafficked women, mostly employed by massage parlors, have been forced to prostitute serving American soldiers. Virtually all women entered the US through marriages to soldiers.

The Christal Jones Story
The Free Press discovers that teenage girls from Vermont have been "hooked on heroin and whisked away to New York" where they have been forced into prostitution. Many of the young women have been in state custody, but the state lacks "the money, manpower or wherewithal to keep track of its incorrigible charges," the investigative series reveals. Some of the stories shed light on the "heroin epidemic that consumed many young Vermonters," and other articles focus on the deviant activity of a Burlington businessman who has been taking tens of thousands of pornographic pictures, some of underage girls. The coverage starts with a story about the death of 16-year-old Christal Jones, a ward of the state who died in a seedy New York apartment, and whose fate has been kept from the public by the state officials.

Dirty Little Secret
Reader's Digest looks into the sex slave trade that has "exploded across the globe during the past decade, and inevitably . . . has reached the United States." More disturbing are the "estimates of women and children smuggled into the United States run as high as 50,000 a year, and many are forced into the sex industry." Reader's Digest reports on two specific cases of young girls promised good jobs in the United States and then forced into prostitution once here. Fortunately, a bill signed by President Clinton in October, "allows for life imprisonment for those convicted of trafficking children into the United States for purposes of illegal sex." Despite harsher punishments, "the victims of this cruel trade can be rescued, but their lives can never be fully restored."
