The Price of Parking
The City of Columbia disregarded a study it comissioned building a parking garage double the size of a 3rd party recommendation. The garage, at 5th and Walnut in downtown Columbia, MO, remains mostly empty putting financial strain on the city's parking utility. Yet the city plans on building another parking garage six blocks away from the brand new garage. The city didn't have the money to pay for the first garage and doesn't have money to pay for the second garage. The first garage cost taxpayers $21 million. The city says the second garage will cost another $12 million- not including interest.

Judges get a 'good gig' in KC Municipal Court
In this report, Star reporters unravel the relaxed working hours of Kansas City municipality judges by investigating the judges' entries and exits from the city garage where the judges park. They find out that on an average these judges work less than 30 hours a week. From the questionnaire, "the judges do little legal research or issue written opinions; most of their job is done from the bench". The report also shows how the judges arrive late at work and leave early by 3 p.m. And furthermore, for taking off early on Friday's and 45 days off each year, these judges are paid nearly $119,000 a year- higher than any Missouri judge except those on the State Supreme Court.

A KXLY-TV investigation into an overpriced parking garage leads Tom Grant and Adele Steiger to discover a complicated property scheme that diverted $10 million in public funds into a private project. However, now the city is losing money from the deal while the Cowles are still reaping huge profits -- and the city's major media outlets, all owned by the Cowles, are refusing to investigate this issue's obvious conflicts of interest.
