  • The Color Of Suspicion

New York Times Magazine goes in-depth and behind the scenes of the issues of racial profiling in America's police departments. By riding along with cops in major cities across America, a picture slowly builds up of how cops really think, what cops really do and what the job requires of them. Central to the issue is the question about if and when race can be used to pull over motorists, whether in certain areas, groups of people of a certain race, driving particular types of vehicles are more likely to be committing certain types of crime. Beat cops seem to be speaking a different language from administrators.

  • Crimes and Misdemeanors

"I wanted a little 'NYPD Blue' grit with maybe a grim dash of 'Homicide' tossed in, and a big dose of true bad-boys-bad-boys-whatcha-gonna-do TV. What I got was a realistic mix of bad guys, boredom, breasts, and busting chops, topped off with a wrenching shot of tragedy - cops shooting another cop." Paul Kandarian rides along with Detectives Bobby Drohan and John Corley of the Providence Police Department detective unit and observes the day-to-day life of a two of Providence's most productive cops. He discovers that in the violent and often gruesome world of detective work, one of the things most vital to the job is humor. On Kandarian's last ride, he privy to the investigation of the shooting of Providence cop Cornel Young, by two other cops.

ABC News 20/20's story "Travelers Beware" examined the nature of crimes committed against travelers at the nation's airports. Through the use of hidden cameras, police "ride-alongs," and airport surveillance footage viewers had a first hand look at the methods and practices of organized, sophisticated, well-trained thieves. The report examined how these thieves took advantage of lenient penalties due to the non-violent nature of their crimes, lax enforcement of security by airline and airport officials, and untrained or under-staffed law enforcement agencies and the crowded confused environment of the airport to operate with impunity traveling from airport to airport.
