According to the article, "Rail yards have become one of the country's most serious pollution problems. For decades, railroads have carried enormous quantities of hazardous chemicals, and rail yards were used to transfer and store them. By the industry's own admission, leaks, spills and even outright dumping were once common."

WJLA revealed alarming evidence that America's largest railroad companies are running unsafe trains. The investigation documented trains leaving rail yards with defective equipment, improper train inspections, inadequate record keeping, and a repeated pattern of safety violations on every major rail line. The stories also showed federal regulators are well aware of these problems, but the information obtained from their files had never been made public. (April 29 - 30; June 6, 1996)

Doctors warned them and ear protection was available, but some railroad companies and the government failed to protect the health and safety of thousands of people.
