  • "The New Tax Man"

This series of stories by the Huffington Post Investigative Fund examines how tough financial times have affected "ordinary" citizens. Reporters revealed how local property tax collectors were "selling the right to collect unpaid taxes to private investors," which could leave homeowners with large extra fees, and the possibility of losing "their home if they are unable to pay."

  • "Fighting New Jersey's Tax Crush"

The Abury Park Press takes an in-depth look at the tax system in New Jersey. Based on empirical evidence, reporters found New Jersey's system to have the highest costs in the nation due to property taxes being based on the "what the town says" is the worth of your house. Low- and middle-income homes are paying more than the wealthy, and many businesses are being forced to close or move out of the state due to tax increases.

  • Earl's Special Interest: The Result

WKMG-TV continues covering the fallout from "Earl's Special Interest," an investigative piece WKMG-TV broadcast last year about the longest serving tax collector in the State of Florida who rewards his campaign contributors and their clients with the highest rates allowed by law at his annual tax certificate sale, even though he's required to accepted the lowest bids at the auction. Since "Earl's Special Interest was broadcast in 2001, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has "threatened to removed the tax collector from office."

  • Top delinquent taxpayers: Debtors owe Waterbury millions

A Republican-American investigation exposes the failure of the city of Waterbury to go after its top delinquent taxpayers who owe $6.4 million in real estate property taxes. The story reveals that "thanks to court action, environmental issues, and sale of liens, the cash-strapped city isn't likely to collect anytime soon." The analysis shows that of "the city's $27.3 million in delinquent taxes ... the top debtors owe 23 percent of the total." The author describes each of the top 10 debtor properties. The investigation is illustrated with a full list of real estate tax delinquencies as of March 22, 2001, as provided by the tax collector. The package includes also a question-and-answer section designed to help readers who find themselves on the list of delinquent taxpayers.
