KING-TV reports "the King County Sheriff's Department trading and re-selling thousands of weapons seized from criminals. Pohlman uncovered repeated sales of assault weapons and murder weapons. Pohlman tracked the weapons to gun dealers and manufacturers across the country."

Gun dealers are choosing to manufacture and market small handguns in light of recent legislation allowing concealed weapons. Arkansas, North Carolina, Texas and Virginia all passed laws permitting the use of concealed weapons.

This series includes articles on tracking guns in the Denver area. "Killer's pistol akin to banned model" and "Following the guns" look at where the Columbine killers got their weapons -- a local gun show. In "Guns for Sale" (a three-part series) The Denver Post found police officers selling banned arms to gun dealers and criminals. The Post analyzed thousands of ATF firearms tracing records from 1994-98. The Post found in close to 3,000 cases guns the police sold back to the public ended up back in the hands of other law-enforcement agencies. In "The gun pipeline" In a three-part series,The Denver Post analyzed databases from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to examine the impact of multiple handgun sales on crime. The paper found these weapons, many of which were resold on the street, were used in armed robberies and homicides across the country

Under the Gun
The Post's detailed examination of the federal Bureau of Alcohol and Firearms and the lax regulation that allows abuses to go unchecked reveals that: the average weapons dealer can expect an inspection from federal regulators about once every 20 years; getting a federal license to sell rifles, shotguns and handguns can be as easy as sending in a two-page form and paying a $30 fee; chances are nearly nine out of 10 that no one will interview you beforehand; and, renewal of the three-year license are nearly automatic. Morning Call (Allentown, Pa.) runs a four-part series on how the system to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill has almost completely broken down; felons and the mentally ill are allowed to become gun dealers, shops don't ask for identification, politicians try to appear tough by banning assault weapons when they are a small part of the problem and gun shows allow dealers to sell weapons easily and without a license.
