The IRE Resource Center is a major research library containing more than 23,250 investigative stories — both print and broadcast. Add to that more than 3,000 tipsheets from our national conferences on how to cover specific beats or do specific stories and you have a resource that no reporter or editor should be without. New Data and New Uses for Data from the Census

Recapturing History
Gebeloff uses a PowerPoint Presentation to show how to use IPUMS (Integrated Public Use Microdata), a website maintained by the University of Minnesota, to find trends. IPUMS uses data collected by the census but analyzes them in ways the official census has not published. He shows, for example, a table showing where self-employed Chinese who work in Manhattan live. This was not published by the Census.

Finding Census Data Online: An easy reference guide
This is a good guide to extracting useful information from the Census website. The tipsheet lists the information that tis still unavailable, like religious affiliation, as well as the information that is, such as race. The tipsheet ends with a list of links to various sections of the census site.

The American Community Survey: The Every Year Census
This tipsheet is a good overview of the American Community Survey, which is a rolling monthly survey, supposed to replace the census by 2010. Perry discusses what it is, when it is, what information is included and what shortcomings the survey may have. The tipsheet also includes a list of online resources for journalists who want to work with that information.

This tipsheet is a guide to help journalists get ready to report on the every- year census. It includes advice about how to plan for those stories, how to focus the stories and how to adapt to the change. Especially useful in this tipsheet is information about how the new census is different from before (ex: it only includes households, so prisons and dorms won't be included in the results).
