Data
The IRE and NICAR Database Library can provide several databases of federal spending, including Department of Defense contracts and the agency's research grants.

The contract data covers 1992 through 2001 fiscal years. Contracts included in the 2001 data show services being performed or items being produced in all U.S. states, as well as U.S. territories and some foreign countries. The data also lists the contractor performing the service or providing the product, as well as their address and the location where the work is being performed. The data will also reveal patterns in military spending.

IRE members can search contracts on the Web by country or by federal contractor on the Campaign Finance Information Web site.

The grants data covers 1996 through 2001. The records show the name and location of the recipient, the amount of the awarded, the agency and program under which the award was made, and the project description.

The Center for Public Integrity recently published a story using both databases, looking at contracts and grants related to the Office of Total Information Awareness. The Dallas Business Journal looked at federal contracts in North Texas shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and revisited the topic in September 2002.

Just updated by the Database Library, Immigration and Naturalization Service Legal Residency data contains information on people who were admitted as immigrants (permanent residents of the United States) between FY 1980 and FY 2000. A journalist can examine the flow of immigrants from different countries and for what occupations.
