Uplink
Uplink debuts as an electronic newsletter
IRE and the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting invite you to download a free copy of the new electronic Uplink. The bimonthly CAR newsletter delivers articles written by top journalists working with the latest developments in the field, and it's now an interactive, full-color PDF publication.
The electronic edition will replace the paper one beginning with the May/June 2007 issue.
Uplink features stories explaining how journalists successfully used data analysis for investigative projects, breaking news, and everyday beat coverage. It's a forum for discussing the latest ways to map data for news stories or how to deliver innovative data packages online. Other important topics include changes in government data-access policies, and the recent transition of government agencies to providing data online, rather than in print format.
The columns in Uplink provide valuable pointers for database analysis, software and technology tips, plus success stories written by journalists new to CAR. The issues also include stories by Database Library staff about its data and resources , plus information on upcoming IRE and NICAR conferences. NICAR is a joint project of IRE and the Missouri School of Journalism.
Subscription price is $40 for IRE members, $60 for nonmembers. Institutional subscriptions are $70.
Back issues of Uplink may be purchased for $10 each. An additional $10 user fee is charged to nonmembers. Check with the Resource Center at 573-882-3364 or rescntr@nicar.org for availability.
FAQ's for Uplink subscribers
Q. How will I receive future copies of Uplink?
A. Uplink subscribers will be notified via email when a new issue is available for download.
If you are an IRE member with an Uplink subscription, you can access the PDF downloads by logging in on the IRE Web site. After you enter your last name and IRE member identification number, the "Contents" menu on the member login page should display a "Read the Latest Version of Uplink " option. (Click here to see what the menu should look like after you log in.) This system is currently activated. If you cannot access your subscription with your member ID, please contact John Green, jgreen@ire.org.)
If you subscribe but are NOT an IRE member, you will receive a non-member login and password to download Uplink. To obtain a password, contact John Green, jgreen@ire.org. Be sure to specify an email address for Uplink download notifications. The login for non-members will be available beginning with our March-April 2007 edition. To download your issue of Uplink, visit https://www.ire.org/uplink.
Q. Will I still get a paper copy of Uplink?
A. Under current plans, the March-April 2007 issue will be the final edition to be printed and mailed to subscribers.
Q. How can I save issues of Uplink?
A. Subscribers will receive a year-end archive of Uplink on CD. Also, subscribers can access archived PDF editions online ( beginning with Uplink Jan./Feb. 2007).
Q. Why move to a PDF publication?
A. The interactive PDF format offers many benefits for readers, including searchable text, links to external Web sites, links to documents or data on the IRE and NICAR Web sites, and full-color graphics. Electronic downloads mean faster delivery, too. The move to PDF includes plans to increase multimedia Web content associated with Uplink and news updates to make its content more timely and useful.
Q. Will the subscription price change?
A. The subscription price will remain the same. This helps IRE and NICAR offset the cost of staff time and resources needed to produce Uplink. We also plan to add additional features, such as online updates and timely resources in between our regular bimonthly editions. (Note for new or renewing international subscribers: The electronic format eliminates the need for an international delivery surcharge. International readers now pay the standard subscription rates.)
