logoMoney in Politics:
Following the money trail in 2008 elections

Evanston, Ill. — March 24-25, 2007

Return to IRE Training

Host: Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University

At this one day workshop, learn how to follow the money and its influence after the election. The workshop, led by Aron Pilhofer, The New York Times, and Derek Willis, Washingtonpost.com, will emphasize money in local and state elections on the horizon, including the impact of 527 organizations at those levels. And a second half-day, hands-on computer-assisted reporting session — limited to the first 32 who sign up — will emphasize analysis of campaign finance data.

This workshop is being made possible in part by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Workshop Fees (includes a one-year IRE membership): $40 for professionals, $20 for students

Optional Computer-Assisted Reporting Training will be offered Sunday, March 25. There are only 32 spaces for CAR training, available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This hands-on, computer-assisted reporting class will build data analysis skills for reporters covering money in politics. The class will use federal and state-level data, including "527" data from the IRS. Instructors will emphasize story ideas generated by the analysis.
